The College of Our Lady of the Elms, more popularly known as Elms College, is a liberal arts Catholic college in the city of Chicopee, in the State of Massachusetts. Elms started out in 1897 as a girl’s preparatory school in Pittsfield, Mass. It was called the Academy of Our Lady of the Elms. Then in 1899, the school was purchased by the Springfield diocese and changed the school’s name to St. Joseph’s Normal College. Then in 1928, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts approved the charter to change the as a liberal arts college for women and the school was renamed as the current name of the College of Our Lady of the Elms.
The school campus is found just 2 miles north of Metro Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. The main campus is found on a large quadrangle, and has 14 buildings. Elms offers 33 academic majors to more than 800 full students. Elms College features over 60 full time faculty members.
Among the most honored traditions of the school include Elms Night. This event takes place in the beginning of the first semester to welcome 1st year students. The event starts with a dinner outdoors where all Elms students, faculty and staff attend. The freshmen are encouraged by seniors to sing a pop song. After dinner, the senior class then throw items from the 2nd floor balcony to the freshmen on the first floor.
Elms competes at the NCAA Division III level. The school fields teams in lacrosse, basketball, cross-country, baseball, golf, softball, soccer, field hockey, swimming and volleyball,. The athletic teamss of Elms train and work at The Maguire Center. The Elms College Blazers team colors are a green, gold, and white. The school nickname are the Blazers. The nickname comes from a discontinued tradition wherein students would wear blazers after their freshman year.
